be the change

“We must be the change we want to see in the world.”

I was recently made aware that this quote has not been definitively traced back to Mahatma Gandhi.  His grandson, Arun Gandhi relayed it as something his grandfather said, although further details are unclear.

This quote is something that follows strongly with Gandhi’s teachings and his way of leading his life, and it does meet up closely with another of his teachings, which is also loosely sourced.

“If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him.”

Regardless of the official wording that Gandhi used, it pretty well expresses his teachings.

If everyone remembered and acted on the simple words, “be the change,” each day in their actions, the world would be a much better place.
