Pesticides, Yum!

I was reading a blog I like to read, Soilentgreens http://soilentgreens.wordpress.com, and she posted a link to GreenMedInfo.com.  It has a great list of foods to avoid because they are full of pesticides.  It’s a pretty good list.  Scary though.

some of our 2011 starts

I reflected on this list and was both happy with myself and also a little miffed. I grow a lot of these items in our own garden, buy others from our friends at the market that also grow organically and sometimes pick up some from the organic section at the grocery store.  But sometimes I do go cheap and pick up some non organic celery and apples, ie. covered in pesticides.

So what’s the big deal about eating foods that have had pesticides sprayed on them?  Can’t you just wash that junk off?  Sorry, but not so much.  See, the food absorbs some of the pesticides.  Our bodies do clean some of the chemical out, but we eat so much of it that our bodies can’t remove all of the toxins so some of it stays with us.

Big deal, we eat some pesticides and a few less bugs will be bothering us right?  That would be a pretty nifty side effect, but unfortunately, pesticides don’t work like that.  And to make it worse, there are a bunch of studies that link pesticide consumption to things like ADHD, birth defections, Parkinson’s, and the big “C”, you know, Cancer.

The article is also positive and gives a few foods that are the lowest in pesticides!  I like that glimmer of hope they leave you with.  Again, I’ll give you the quick list, but you’ll have to click on the link to get the full story.

The top 5, with #5 being the best are:

  1. Bananas
  2. Grapefruit
  3. Almonds
  4. Asparagus
  5. Onions *best*

Do what you like with the information, I know it might just sound like some whack job crazy tree huggin hippie crap.  And yeah yeah, and you have a grandma that ate fried food and lived to be a 100 and a granddad that drank and smoked all his life and he was just dandy.  But you know, some people do get lucky.  And the other big thing about all this food scare stuff, is that most of it is relatively new.  Your grandparents were not eating foods that were treated with chemicals like we do today.
