Apocalypse Preparedness Wish List: BioLite Camp Stove

BioLite HomeStove - with pot on top - stock photo

A friend at work showed me this really cool packable stove recently and it quickly went on my APWL (Apocalypse Preparedness Wish List).   http://www.biolitestove.com

This crafty little stove is $129 and created by the same people that created the BioLite HomeStove.

The BioLite HomeStove was made for some of the world’s population that rely on fires for cooking.  It was created primarily to cut down on the toxic fumes and amount of mass needed to fuel these fires.  The BioLite website linked above has tons of good info, photos and video of the HomeStove if you are interested in checking it out further

The BioLite people remodeled their HomeStove into a portable light weight version primarily for campers, and named it the CampStove.

Some of the key features of this little stove that make it ideal for any survivalist situation are…

  • Its light weight, only weighing 2lbs 1oz.
  • It doesn’t require typical fuel but instead burns a surprisingly small amount of wood like mass instead.  This means you don’t have to secure fuel to operate it, nor do you have to carry fuel if you are on the move.  Instead just grab up some sticks, dried poo, pine cones or dried brush when you need to cook.
  • Its small.  Just a bit bigger than a water bottle at 8×5” (pictured below)
  • Creates a small amount of power that works with USB chargeable devices like GPS, LED lights and even smartphones!
  • I read that it is designed to be a low smoke producer and it shields a flame somewhat.  Which means it will not attract attention like a camp fire would.

I am trying to convince myself I need one of these to use when I go to horse competitions and camping.

There are other similar designs and ideas, including the EcoZoom line.  The Zoom Versa Lite is similarly priced but coming in at 18lbs, in my opinion, this design would be better suited for a more stationary set up.
